JOSEPHINE

My nerves calmed down as the evening went on, although they didn’t completely disappear. Remy was the perfect host and a fantastic cook. I had a nice evening, above my expectations. Remy was funny, thoughtful, and even surprised me with his knowledge of certain subjects… I was a bit ashamed of myself because I’d automatically assumed he was a good-looking carer who focused more on his looks than his general knowledge.

Big mistake.

“I really enjoyed myself, thank you for dinner.”

I was a bit sad the evening was over. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I’d arrived, but now I was surprised I didn’t want to leave.

After eating, we continued the conversation on the couch. This time, I didn’t think twice about where to sit. And I noticed that Remy didn’t either. Or maybe he had? Every time either of us moved, the fabric of his jeans rubbed against my thigh. This simple friction was able to awaken a part of me that had been asleep for too long.

“Did you drive?”

“No, I fancied a walk.”

I didn’t tell him that I was so excited for our date I was ready very early. But still, it was a good opportunity to get out of my apartment and avoid my mom’s questions.

“Would you mind if I walked you home?”

What did that mean? He wanted to walk with me? Why? Did he expect me to give him a ride or something? I’d just spent the entire evening telling him about my parents living with me.

Or was it code for something else?

My God, I was so rusty I didn’t even know how to act around a guy. I was pathetic.

“Err…”

“I need to walk Maurice, so maybe we could walk together?”

My mini panic attack subsided like a soufflé coming out of the oven. And I was even a bit disappointed.

The dog, of course, he needs to walk the dog.

Remy had a dog.

A firefighter with a dog.

A few minutes later, we left the apartment. The air was thick outside, and I could hear thunder in the distance. I hoped it wouldn’t arrive before we’d finished our walk.

I didn’t walk very quickly, because, for once, I’d worn heels, but Remy didn’t seem in a hurry either. As for Maurice, he sniffed just about every tree we passed. At this rate, we weren’t going to get there any time soon, but I didn’t mind.

The sidewalk got narrow at some points, and we had to move closer together, provoking a delicious sensation in me.

Was I relaxed? I wasn’t so sure. I was just as full of electricity as the storm that was rumbling in the distance.

It’s well known that nerves and heels don’t mix. So, when we crossed the street, I stepped up onto the sidewalk and saw myself falling forward. One second later and I’d have been face first on the asphalt. Luckily, a muscly pair of arms had caught me just in time.

“Careful!”

Remy helped me back up onto the sidewalk. But he didn’t immediately let go. “You okay?”

“Yes, more embarrassed than hurt.
